Engineer

Responsible for general function of ensuring the efficient, reliable, and safe operation of plant, by overseeing the design, installation, maintenance, and repair of all plant equipment and systems.

Main Job Tasks

  • Design products and systems that meet the needs of businesses and consumers.
  • Conduct research and development in aid of improving existing products and systems.
  • Test and troubleshoot products and systems during the design, development, or manufacturing process ensuring that they meet safety and performance standards.
  • Manage projects from start to finish, ensuring that they are completed on time and within budget.
  • Communicate effectively with clients, stakeholders, and other engineers. They need to be able to explain complex technical concepts in a clear and concise way.
  • Analyze data and make recommendations
  • Prepare technical reports
  • Work with other engineers and technicians
  • Stay up-to-date on the latest engineering trends

Duties and Responsibilities

Adhesive Dept:    

  • Understand the principles of kettles & agitator mixers
  • Understand the principles of a “Y-blender”
  • Understand why some adhesives are made in kettles vs agitator mixers
  • Understand the laboratory tests for viscosity, sg & gel times
  • Understand how to use the various lab equipment, viscometer, hydrometers & measuring cylinders/flasks
  • Understand how to read a platform scale (kilograms)
  • Understand how to read thermometers (digital & liquid-in-glass)
  • Understand the difference in filling containers by weight vs volume

Formaldehyde Facility        

  • Understand the Process Flow ie reactor, aftercooler, absorption column
  • Understand the purpose of the catalyst and how it converts methanol to formaldehyde
  • Understand the importance of the blower
  • Understand the importance of the cooling liquid (Dowtherm/Therminol)
  • Understand the principles of the cooling condenser
  • Understand the principles of the absorption column
  • Understand how the absorption column strengthens the concentration of the urea-formaldehyde 
  • Understand the importance of pH in the absorption column
  • Understand/learn the process operations at the analog control board
  • Understand the laboratory techniques of testing the Urea Formaldehyde Concentrate
  • Understand/learn titration techniques and the use of the refraction meter, pH meter, laboratory scales, fume cupboard & oven

Liquid Resin (2 weeks):       

  • Understand the batching up of reactor
  • Understand the significance of mole ratio as it relates to gel time and viscosity
  • Understand why the raw materials are added in a specific order into the reactor
  • Understand the cooking process and the term “reflux”
  • Understand the significance of pH and temperature
  • Understand the function of the condenser
  • Understand the lab work i.e testing of liquid resin samples & filling out log of temperature vs viscosity
  • Understanding when the decision is made to stop the batch and how it is stopped. 

Powder Plant (2 weeks):     

  • Understand the process flow
  • Understand significance of dehumidifier and how it works
  • Understand the significance of Rotary valves and how they work
  • Understand the significance of cyclones
  • Understand how the liquid resin is atomized
  • Understand the significance of thermocouples and air sweeps
  • Understand the significance of the sifter and how it works
  • Understand the relationship of set temperatures at points throughout the plant
  • Understand how the set temperatures are maintained
  • Understand the reason for the addition of Sipinat 
  • Understand the lab work and method of testing gel time & viscosity
  • Understand the mechanics of the packaging machine

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering
  • 3+ years of experience in engineering
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
