Dr Rolph Balgobin
Executive Chairman
Dr. Rolph Balgobin is married with three children. He is owner of a successful group of companies, an educator, researcher, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (FRSA), a black belt in Shotokan karate and a eucharistic minister among other things.
In entrepreneurial life, he is Executive Chairman of The Quicksilver Group which owns subsidiaries operating in the Energy, Education, Manufacturing, Professional Services and Property sectors.
In corporate life, he is a director of several companies and social enterprises. He also was Chairman of CL Financial, Home Construction Limited, Angostura Limited, Caribbean Dockyard Services, Caribbean Petrochemical Manufacturing, and several other companies within the CLF Group. He was also a Director of the Massy Group, the largest conglomerate in the country. He was President of the Trinidad and Tobago Manufacturers Association (TTMA) and served on the ratings committee of the Caribbean rating agency CARICRIS.
Dr. Balgobin has been chairman of the Point Lisas Industrial Port Development Company (PLIPDECO), a director of the Telecommunications Services of Trinidad and Tobago (TSTT), the Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago (CBTT) and Youth Business Trinidad and Tobago (YBTT).
In education, he was NGC Distinguished Fellow in Innovation and Entrepreneurship and Executive Director and Research Fellow of the Arthur Lok Jack Graduate School of Business at the University of the West Indies (UWI). At the time of his appointment, he was one of the youngest business school deans in the world.
He has published research in academic journals on corporate turnaround and corporate governance and was a columnist for the Trinidad Express and Trinidad Guardian newspapers.
In national service, he was an Independent Senator in the Parliament of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. He chaired the Joint Select Committee of Parliament and served on the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) and the Public Accounts Enterprises Committee (PAEC).
He led the technical team which pulled together the Vision 2020 National Strategic Plan for Trinidad and Tobago.
He was also member of a Cabinet-appointed Committee for the review and assessment of all Special Purpose/Wholly Owned State Enterprises as well as to review the Government Assisted Tertiary Education (GATE) programme and the Economic Development Advisory Board of Trinidad and Tobago.
He serves on the Finance Council of the Catholic Church, Archdiocese of Port of Spain, and is Chair of the Real Estate Committee which governs all Church landholdings.
Dr. Balgobin holds advanced degrees from the University of the West Indies (B.Sc., EMBA), and postgraduate degrees from the University of Cambridge and Manchester University. He also holds a Certificate and Diploma in Corporate Governance from the Caribbean Corporate Governance Institute and a postgraduate diploma in Corporate Governance from the ACCA.
